Silence

I know there has been an exceeding amount of silence coming from me in the last few weeks. I have been making promise after promise that I would finish my book and write my next one. They are usually quickly followed by excuse after excuse why I didn't write anything.

The trust.

Life happens. When you are working 12 to 14 hour days, things get a little sidetracked. Work has been crazy with this freeze/thaw cycle that we have been having. -40 degrees Celsius to -5 degrees Celsius causes pipes to burst and chaos to explode out of peoples basements and underneath people sinks.

And no, that is not some new from of saying sex or anything sex related.

You sick bastards. Get your minds out of the gutter.

My day job is that I am a Water Restoration Technician. I have been promoted. They given the busy week. We deal with peoples houses when there houses flood.

Anyways. I am going to leave my blog here for now. I have finished editing the last of my novel, Solar Storm. I just need to write in the edits.

Wish me luck.

Mole People of Mars

Mole People of Mars.

That's right. Five hundred years in the future, there are mole people living on Mars.

But they are not like what you think. They are not short, and fat. They come in many different races, creeds and sizes. The one thing that sets them apart from the other billions of human beings are the fact that they still live underground on Mars. Especially when it has been terraformed for the last two hundred years.

And they are blind.

But why did they move underground in the first place? Why are they still living underground on Mars? Why are they blind?

I'll start at the top.

First, Mars has been, and always will be a hot seat of rebellion and strife against Earth. Even after the last stomping where Earth had managed to crush and defeat her Armies so utterly.

During the first uprisings against Earth's oppressive regime, the people on Mars moved into underground mines to hide from the armies of earth.

During that time, they built an extensive network of tunnels and caverns to house the Martian population. When Earth was defeated, most people left the tunnels to live in the habitats on the surface. A few people stayed behind to live in the caves and tunnels.

Over the years, many different governments came and went. Mars would rebel, self govern for a while, then Earth would crush the rebellion and Earth would govern things for a while.

In all that time, the Mole People of Mars would stay the same. Each time rebellion or strife, no matter how terraformed Mars was, or the lack thereof in the early instances, the surface people of Mars would run into the tunnels where the Earthmen could not get at them.

Over the years the hardcore Mole People developed a 'shinning' for there eyes. It is a rather expensive surgery that makes the light sensors more sensitive. It basically makes them able to see in the dark. The trade off is that in the daylight, they can't see.

Goggles have become very fashionable.

So I answered the first question. They moved underground to get away from the evil Earthling soldiers.

Why are they still living underground on Mars? Simple. Their eyes. And the fact that they are very conservative. And traditional. They are the type of people that tend to forget that they came from Earth in the first place.

Why are they blind? Trick statement. They aren't blind, they just can't see in the light. In the dark, however, there eyesight is killer.

Mole People, (Note: Need better name. Something that they call themselves. Mole People is an insulting outsider name.) don't live only underground on Mars. They do travel out for many reasons. Recreation. Sport. War. Exile.

Nor do they all have the see-in-the-dark eyes. It is a right of passage from children to adults. To be from the Mole People (Again. Name. Help!) and not have shined eyes is a sign of exile.

To be exiled from the People is a punishment worse than death. To travel freely on there own free will is different. You can go home in the latter case.

Personal Update.

I realized that I have only posted one blog post in the first half of January. Bad Nathan. Bad.

In my defense, I do have a one month old. I am writing this with her wiggling in my arms.

Excuse me. I need to change her diaper.

Again.

Okay. I am back. Where was I?

Audrey. My life has again changed for the better. First with Donnie 18 months ago, now with Audrey.

I am in the middle of an adaptation period where I attempt to shuffle my priorities around to make room for Audrey. Unfortunately, she has to be at the top, tied with Donnie underneath my wife.

That moves things like work and writing around. Makes it harder.

Same amount to time in the day, more stuff to do. Something has to give.

Like sleep.

Speaking of that, I need to get my solid six hours of rest.

Cheers.

History of Venus- Venosaurs

So it has been a while since my last post. And I did promise to get more written in this blog.

No I don't have any excuses. I haven't gotten much farther in my story. I am still about half way through editing it.

The problem. Skyrim. My wife thought to reward my hard efforts with such a wonderful gift. She also got me the Firefly Season and the follow up movie Serenity. As research I assure you. She also got my the Writers Market 2012 so that I can get my work out there.

Back to the problem, I have very little free time to myself. Work, 2 kids, a wife, sleep. They take up most of my time. I usually end up sacrificing a little on the sleep category to get my writing done.

Skyrim is such a good game that it defenestrated the writing part of my day and soon started to threaten the later two categories with a big stick. If only I was getting paid to write, then I'd have more time to play that awesome game.

Now to my story of the future.

Venus, as I explained in my earlier post, was terraformed by building large flying cities. There soul purpose was to extract the carbon from it's atmosphere and to ship it off planet. Usually to Mars.

That process slowly lowered the atmospheric pressure and temperature of the planet to something more reasonable.

Venus is not that much hotter than Earth due to its proximity to the sun. It is slightly hotter, but not by much. It is hotter because of its thick Carbon Dioxide atmosphere. The carbon acts as a green house effect keeping the heat in. Removing the carbon solves that problem.

This process takes them hundred of years. It is not a fast process. If Mars wasn't buying the carbon, it wouldn't have happened. It was the other planets in the solar system that wanted to build up an atmosphere that kept the Venus Project alive.

Mars, of course was eventually terraformed to the point where it didn't need the extra carbon, but then the Moon's of Jupiter started there terraforming projects and bought the carbon.

About seventy-five years before the current date, Venus's atmosphere plateaued. The temperature stopped at 75 degrees Celcius and the pressure stopped at about 1.8 bars. Both too low to kill humans outright, but still too high to be comfortable.

The lower temperature meant that water could start to form on the surface. It was mined off from a nearby asteroid. Seas and rivers formed with normal weather patterns forming as well.

Once the pressure and the temperature started to get close to a good range, the scientists started to see if they could get some plants and animals to populate the surface.

For years they tried, genetically altering scores of different species to attempt and get something to work. They had huge success with getting tropical jungle plants to grow, but had no success with anything mammal. Insects, reptiles, fish all grew and spread like wildfire.

One scientist, seeing that reptiles were thriving on the planet, expanded there species list to fill out the food chain on the planet. Some very small, some very large.

So Venus, in the current time, his a hot planet with a very small human presence on the surface. It consists mostly of thugs, bandits, rebels. Some scientists have a base or two there, but most law-abiding people live on the cities above the ground. The planet surface consists of an infestation of very large dinosaurs, or Venosaurs as I have dubbed them.

That's all that I have for today.

Until next time.

Cheers.
